The (human) science of medical virtual learning environments
This is an invited contribution, from the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine’s Professor of Anaesthesia and the MoD’s Surgeon General, to the journal’s special issue on Military Medicine in the 21st Century. The editors requested a critical review of the most important Human Factors lessons learned from the domain of surgical simulation, with the aim of mandating the adoption of human-centred design in future medical training. The paper builds on technologies developed by the author (e.g. the MoD-sponsored Interactive Trauma Trainer). The recommendations, including a new simulation “fidelity continuum”, are being clinically translated in supporting post-operative recovery and amputee rehabilitation.
