Additional information

The novelty of this paper is twofold, firstly a well know microwave device, a branch-line coupler, is designed, constructed and tested for the first time in ultra-miniature form using micromachining techniques, and secondly a method to extend the bandwidth of any branch-line coupler is outlined. The coupler integrates novel miniature square coaxial cable to coplanar waveguide transitions for measurements. This is the first time such a complex multiport component of this type has been demonstrated in miniature coaxial-cable. The work was supported by EPSRC (£1.5M) contracts on micromachined circuits and novel circuit design with 5 companies involved.
