Additional information

The paper presents the first analytical model of the dynamics of a cymbal ultrasonic transducer. The transducer is being researched, designed and characterised for incorporation in high power ultrasonic applications for the first time, for example in ultrasonic orthopaedic surgical devices. The research was funded by EPSRC (EP/G046948/1) in collaboration with Prof Hamish Simpson, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon (Hamish.Simpson@edinburgh.ac.uk), with the prototype being trialled through an EPSRC IAA award (63848/1). This output also led to a further EPSRC grant (EP/K020013/1 PI Lucas, £982k) to investigate the actuation of ultrasonic needles for targeted drug delivery.
