Additional information

Low-cost, reproducible methods for fabricating Coarse Wavelength Division (CWDM) sources are required in consumer applications such as fibre-to-the-home. Our processing uses simple technologies - sidewall gratings and quantum well intermixing - to realise a 4 channel DFB laser based CWDM chip. The monolithic chip, developed under EPSRC EP/E065112, has a single output switchable between four wavelengths and which offers exceptional coupling efficiency into a single mode fibre. The IEEE paper was an invited research paper following which the SPIE Newsroom invited a further report entitled 'Low-cost light source for optical fiber communication systems', 15 May 2012, SPIE Newsroom (DOI: 10.1117/2.1201204.004228).
