Additional information

This paper describes a new theoretical approach to the estimation of iron loss in electrical machines, with particular emphasis on providing a fast solution for integration within the SPEED motor design software. Test results validate its accuracy over a wide operating range. This work was first presented at the 43rd IEEE IAS Conference where it was awarded 1st prize by the Electrical Machines Committee. The improved iron loss estimation, which is particularly important in large machines directly led to new sales to major wind turbine manufacturers (TECO-Westinghouse, Siemens, Vestas, contact: Dr D Staton, Motor Design Ltd, dave.staton@motor-design.com).
