This paper was the first to present results from representative controlled laboratory experiments of the discolouration processes occurring within water distribution systems. The results fully validated an approach for modelling discolouration that had previously only been calibrated against field observations. This work was instrumental in the evolution and successful continuation of the PODDS – prediction of discolouration in distribution systems – research theme involving a total of 8 different water companies (www.PODDS.co.uk).
