Bubble and Squeek
Research content/process:
This fashion collection was shown at Japan Fashion Week in 2010, one of the world's annual premier venues for new couture. The research process for the development of this collection entailed an examination, selection, combination and creative transformation of a variety of materials and clothing elements associated with recycling, rubbish and associated detritus. These materials and clothing elements also relate particularly to British culture and everyday life. This theme is reflected in the title for the collection, 'Bubble and Squeak,' the name for a revivified food dish composed of the leftovers from the previous day. The research process omnivorously drew together facets of British culture and society from the last forty years - there is, therefore, a punk and post-punk ethos to the clothes.
The output's debut at Japan Fashion Week was, by its very nature, transient and the collection of clothes have since found dispersed venues, owners and cultural articulations. This dissemination was entailed in the conceptualisation of the research process from the outset and accords with the 'bricolage' aspect of punk, upon whose spirit Reem Alasadi draws. The portfolio includes a range of documentary materials including a CD of the catwalk show, material samples, sketchbooks and other collected elements.
