The Maeander Valley

This monograph of c. 120,000 words is the product of four and a half years’ sustained research and writing. The research involved six periods (3-8 weeks each) of travel and fieldwork in Turkey, and the analysis of a very large body of documentary, numismatic and archaeological material, including Byzantine documentary archives, published and unpublished Greek inscriptions (many studied in situ), Greek and Roman coins from several major museum collections, and numerous modern and early modern travellers’ accounts. None of the book’s content was previously published elsewhere, although six technical studies underlying parts of certain chapters appeared as separate articles.
