Selected for publication to celebrate IBM’s centenary in a special issue of the journal that also announced the technology for the first time. This paper addressed the development of the Watson Q&A system that competed against Jeopardy! grand masters in February 2011. The purpose of this paper was to explore user-centred design issues that arose from this innovative technology. This was the only paper in this issue to focus on the user and has since informed IBM’s work on developing this technology and identification of business opportunities.
