English abstract

This is the catalogue for the substantially augmented, revised Spanish version of Impressionist Gardens (National Gallery of Scotland, 2010). Whilst the Introduction is shared with Willsdon’s ‘Impressionist Gardens’ output, the remaining four chapters are different, being extended interpretative essays covering a longer chronological range and greater international diversity.

The chapters feature the identification and analysis of relationships between Pissarro’s kitchen-garden imagery and Republican/Anarchist ideology; discussion of Franco-Iberian interactions in garden painting (Camarasa, Regoyos, Pla, etc); and the presentation of evidence that Impressionist garden painting was an important influence on aspects of Symbolism and the early 20th-century avant-garde (Klimt, Braque, Dufy, Nolde, Ernst, Malevich, etc).
