Reaction wood – a key cause of variation in cell wall recalcitrance in willow
This research paper addresses a key underpinning aspect of biorefining lignocellulosic biomass – namely how to design biomass with advantageous cell wall properties for downstream processing. In this highly innovative study we made the first attempt to elucidate the role of a specific type of wood tissue (Reaction wood) in biorefining. We determined significant hereditable advantages in enzymatic sugar release for certain willow genotypes having reaction wood phenotypes. This work has achieved significant scientific impact, has featured on the BBC and BBSRC websites and the paper has been designated ‘Highly accessed’ by BioMed Central.
