Additional information

<20>Before the publication of this paper, it was assumed that it is always preferable to animate the presentation of dynamic information. This paper reports on the first successful human computer interaction empirical study to test this assumption in the context of dynamic graph drawings. Its findings (that animation results more accurate, but slower, performance for some tasks and that an 'cartoon-strip' presentation is better overall) have been much-cited in the three years since publication. The paper is published in the top-ranked journal for Information Visualisation research.
