Additional information

The originality of the concept extends to the methodology which was innovative and rigorous. Over 3000 still photographs taken during the Kosova war in 1999 were evaluated. They are unique as I had exclusive access to areas directly affected by war. I selected 30 of high artistic merit which brought home the horror and the mundanity of war through images of destroyed buildings and twisted lives, while testifying to the resilience of the human spirit.

Learning from previous use of film stills in moving image such as Chris Marker's ‘Jetee’ I created a succession of images in time to John Young's music. I intertwined them, drawing a story board to maintain the connection with my emotions and visual instinct.

Following its UK launch, the work has toured in three continents. It has particular relevance for the people of Kosova where it was used to stimulate discussions about the war and coming to terms with the past.

The film was selected by a jury for 'Dokufest 10' in 2011, see http://www.dokufest.com
and nominated for the best short film category. The prestigious annual film festival is attended by key artists/promoters in the film/art industry. Press and critics were enthusiastic about our work, which was showcased on television channels.

This work has a continuing impact, demonstrated by the festival showings listed below, and is currently being considered for use by the Imperial War Museum and has been shown in a Festival in Romania (September 2013).
