34 - Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory
De Montfort University
Agents of the 3D Revolution - Touring Exhibition
The work exhibited in these exhibitions demonstrates the potential of digital design and manufacturing technologies as creative tools in the creation of art. Techniques derived from product design research have been applied to the creation of limited edition artworks and exhibited in gallery context alongside the work of fine art practitioners. Each exhibition featured 6-8 projects from the author including wearable lighting, lighting installations and sculpture. The work illustrates that it is possible to create not merely physically challenging geometry but artistic concepts that move between the virtual and physical. At the same time the artefacts are finely worked and highly finished and entirely appropriate in the gallery context. These outputs are the latest in a developing body of work which began as a PhD thesis in 2002. The significance of the work is affirmed through acquisitions by MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York (2005) and DHUB the Design Museum of Barcelona (2011) for their respective permanent collections. The work also features regularly it group exhibitions charting the rise of technology in creative practice the latest being Out of Hand: Materialising the post digital at MAD, the Museum of Art & Design, New York.
