Additional information

This was the first exhibition of international jewellery artists presented to Chinese audiences and marked the 10th anniversary of the establishment of jewellery design at the highly regarded Central Academy of Fine Art (CAFA) in Beijing. The curator, Professor Teng Fei, of the CAFA, invited 22 internationally renowned jewelery artists to exhibit their work at the Academy. They came from Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, etc. Professor Teng Fei said: “I organised this exhibition and seminar on the basis of the development of international contemporary jewellery art, inviting well-known international masters and their works to provide the Chinese audience with a chance to learn more about the development of contemporary jewellery design in the West.”

For this exhibition Astfalck showed five new pieces of work representing creative resolutions to her complex conceptual enquiries. These exemplified further advances in her unique aesthetic and philosophical position, both in the practical creative work and its theoretical conceptualisation. This was progressed through research into body related objects, narrative, performative memory and notions of ruination (in relation to historical trauma).

Astfalck delivered a lecture ‘Dreaming Time’ at CAFA on her work and participated in the international seminar related to the exhibition, extending the debate with Chinese and other international art professionals. The exhibition was reviewed by the Chinese and overseas media and Astfalck’s work features in the book associated with the project.

CAFA Art Museum, CAFA School of Design and CaiBai Jewellery supported the exhibition.
