Temperature measurement by thermal strain imaging with diagnostic power ultrasound, with potential for thermal index determination
Ultrasonic strain imaging is the subject of much contemporary research, particularly for soft tissue elastography. In collaboration with colleagues in Bristol, we were the first to observe that the same technique can be applied to detect the change in the speed of ultrasound that occurs when tissue is heated by the absorption of ultrasound during diagnostic imaging. This should lead to the direct measurement of the thermal index (which currently can only be estimated empirically), and which is used to assess the safety of clinical imaging. The work was supported by a grant from the EPSRC.
