Additional information

This paper resulted from collaborative work with Ciulli’s experimental group at University of Pisa focussed on anomalous lubricant film “dimples” seen in point contacts under rolling and sliding conditions. The phenomenon, first identified by Kaneta and co-workers, was attracting considerable interest at the time. The paper combines careful measurements made at Pisa with the advanced numerical modelling capability at Cardiff providing a convincing physical explanation of this phenomenon using a full thermal/non-Newtonian EHL analysis. First author Carli became an ESR at Cardiff on EC Marie Curie ITN WEMESURF before moving to the nuclear industry in his native Italy.
