Additional information

<24> In this paper we investigate how displacing the arborisation of the output of a neuron with an axon like mechanism can lead to extremely efficient use of resources. We find functional effective networks with very parsimonious use of connective wiring. This work has fed into further work undertaken by two PhD projects in collaboration with the Ecole Normale Superieure Paris and the Okinawa Institute of Technology Japan. The paper was an invited and reviewed submission after the work was first presented at the conference Information Processing in Cells and Tissues (IPCAT) 2007.
