• This article develops a new analytical time-domain model to analyse radio-over-free space optical (RoFSO) systems, increasingly applied in military communications

• It evaluates the application for the first time over free space optical systems of the scintillation effect with a log-normal distribution to provide an accurate measure of network performance with respect to signal fading

• Newly derived model is successfully applied for the simulation of wireless transmission impairments leading to a further journal publication

• The work was supported by the national research foundation and the Ministry of Education Science and Technology of Korea
