Additional information

The research for the book developed a means of musical performance analysis not previously investigated. Whereas most performance studies dealing with Western Art Music go from work to performance, Reading Musical Interpretation takes the informed listener as the starting point; theorising musical performance from the listener’s perspective. The work enables an in-depth but also objective way of understanding musical performance (in particular solo piano performance), drawing in theoretical ideas from semiotics, logical philosophy and hermeneutics. The research results in a theoretical framework and analytical method – the ‘interpretative tower’ – which is then tested in a series of case studies.
