Additional information

No method exists to assess the quality of landing lighting used at airports worldwide. We propose using cameras inside aircraft to record images of the lighting. This paper describes a radical new technique to extract information from such images which outperformed current state-of-the-art it was validated against. This research results from work supported by EPSRC EP/DO5902X/1 and Royal Society 2004/R2, with collaboration from Cobham Flight Inspection and the Civil Aviation Authority. It has excited the aviation industry and resulted in invited presentations to the Illuminating Engineering Society North America and invited articles in specialist publications (Airside International, International Airport Review).
