Additional information

This paper was the first to show how to formulate the boundary conditions necessary for finite-difference modelling of acoustic spaces with general frequency-dependent wall impedances. Contributions include a model - which unlike the ‘reflection filter’ approach that dominated up to 2008 - is consistent with theory and includes a tool to exactly predict the numerical error. These features transformed the applicability of FDTD techniques to acoustic problems. This innovation was hailed “a major step forward” in 2008 by the chair of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) Convention Policy (http://www.aes.org/press/?ID=9).
