Additional information

Saxton 2009 is the third and final work in a series of pieces commissioned in 1999 by Stephen Darlington for the choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, with funds provided by the Friends of the Cathedral. The 5-part a cappella setting reflects the Tudor/Stuart favoured sonority, and the birth/death texts are respectively reflected both modally and in terms of symbolic word-setting, the final Gloria, for example, although being identical in both parts, ending affirmatively for the Magnificat but heard fading to silence at the close of the Nunc Dimittis. During the compositional process, Stephen Darlington was able to listen to drafts and advise on aspects of realisation and interpretation.
