Double-weighted statement

Milton's Angels is based on wide-ranging primary research into writing about the doctrine of angels from the Church Fathers to the seventeenth century. It is the first sustained scholarly account of these materials, tracing both the development of theology and modes of writing about angels in an extensive body of texts in English and Latin, researched in British and American libraries. As a critical engagement with Milton, the work required mastery of a further range of scholarship. In its innovative synthesis the book develops an extended account of the theology of divine representation, and its pre-modern association with literary inspiration.
