Additional information

One of a series of three papers relating to acoustic emission and rail wheel interaction. The work is fundamental to the development of techniques which could quantify the exposure of rails from trains using the rail network leading to new improved monitoring and maintenance techniques. An invited talk on the research paper was presented at Rail Research UK in Birmingham. The work is also referenced in a subsequent review paper ‘A review on non-destructive evaluation of rails: State-of-the-art and future development’ (http://pif.sagepub.com/content/222/4/367).
