Additional information

Of key relevance is the potential for these long-lived, late maturing species to accumulate contaminants which are known to impose biological effects on animals. Further, exploitation of deep sea species is likely to increase and an understanding of their contaminant loading is a part of an overall assessment. It is often said that contamination is a localised or coastal problem. This clearly shows that fish from > 1 km depth do contain halogenated hydrocarbons and that the ‘common view’ is not justified.
