Ion irradiation of novel yttrium/ytterbium-based pyrochlores: The effect of disorder
Radiation damage/effects within oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) materials must be predictable if they are to be used in future fission/fusion reactor designs. Model oxides based on ‘real’ systems were irradiated in-situ, which resulted in the development of damage/recovery models and confirmed the atomic structure, previously poorly understood. This work led to other researchers examining similar systems more rigorously, (e.g., DOI:10.1016/j.jnucmat.2012.01.026) and led to a new collaborative research programme with the University of Tennessee (Kurt Sickafus, kurt@utk.edu), on the effects of order/disorder on radiation damage in oxides.
