Additional information

The paper provides the first relative modulus – relative density relationships for low-density polymer-clay nanocomposite foams, which were previously unknown. The relationships were demonstrated to be applicable to other types of low-density nanocomposite foams, meaning they can be used to predict Young’s moduli of general high-porosity nanocomposite foams. Nanocomposite foams possess superior structure and properties over polymer foams, with a predicted market volume of 8.6 billion lbs by 2015 (http://www.bccresearch.com/market-research/plastics/polymeric-foams-pls008g.html). This work will enable development of nanocomposite foams for application in both engineering and biomedical fields.
