Additional information

We showed, for the first time, that the harmful steroid dexamethasone, used to culture human stem cells and induce bone formation, can be replaced by short bouts of mechanical stimulation. This validated a bioreactor culture protocol previously developed in mature bone cells in partnership with Bose-ElectroForce. Influence is demonstrated by the highlighting of this study in a newsletter and application brief by Bose ElectroForce systems group (http://worldwide.bose.com/electroforce/assets/pdf/appBriefs/appbrief_Stem_Cell.pdf) as an example of how their bioreactors can be used to direct stem cell differentiation (contact: Darren_Burke@bose.com).
