Shear stress induces osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells
Stem cells are differentiated into bone cells by steroids that have harmful side effects or growth factors that are too expensive for routine medical use. In collaboration with US partners, we established a technique to apply fluid flow to differentiating stem cells. We demonstrated, using donated human stem cells and polymerase chain reaction analysis, that flow culture can be an alternative method to pre-differentiate cells for clinical use. This work led to a collaboration with a cell culture products company Orla-Protein-Technologies (OPT) to extend the concept to 3D dynamic culture (£32k from OPT, £60k from METRC, grant M4090).
