We developed hyperbranched poly (NIPAM) polymers functionalised with antibiotics sensitive to the presence of bacteria. We applied these novel polymers to our tissue engineered human skin model of an infected burn wound. When the polymers were removed from the infected skin, they bound bacteria, significantly reducing the bacterial load in the infected skin model. This approach to reducing bacterial contamination of wounds has now attracted TSB funding led by Smith & Nephew (£350k) to make an impact in the management of chronic wounds in man.
