Additional information

This paper describes the first temperature dependent structure refinements and magnetic property measurements of the antiferroelectric/antiferromagnetic bismuth neodymium ferrite (0.14≤x≤0.22) phase. At the antiferroelectric transition a discontinuous volume change couples directly to magnetisation, presenting a new methodology for the development of novel magnetoelectric memories and sensors. It is the basis of significant further research in leading international groups (DOI:10.1134/S1063776108080086 and DOI:10.1002/adfm.200902017) and inspired an EPSRC grant and joint papers with the University of Glasgow (EP/J009679/1, EP/J009628/1, £16k DOI: 10.1002/adfm.201201835) to study local structure using aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy.
