Integrated culture and purification of rat Schwann cells from freshly isolated adult tissue
A breakthrough in culturing Schwann cells from adult nerve is reported, potentially transforming regenerative therapies requiring Schwann cells (e.g. nerve injuries). Traditionally, Schwann cell culture has been difficult, needing to isolate cells from neonates or embryos, typically resulting in low yield. We have identified a selective growth medium, unique to an enzyme expressed by Schwann cells. Consequently, Schwann cell culture is now easy, with a simple tissue digest and single growth step. Potential impacts will transform how neuroscience groups worldwide study Schwann cells for experimental and therapeutic use.
