Study of the effects of Ge addition on the microstructure of Nb–18Si in situ composites
This paper had a major influence in shaping the strategy of Rolls-Royce in refractory-metal alloy research to develop future high-pressure turbine-blades (neil.jones@rolls-royce.com). The rigorous understanding of Nb-Si-Ge phase-equilibria developed here substantiated alloy-design methodologies for achieving balanced mechanical and environmental properties and inspired independent research in the German National Programme “Beyond Ni-superalloys”. The research led to the award of a DHPA-studentship with Rolls-Royce, the EU FP7 Accelerated Metallurgy Grant (Euro 185,984), and an invited Highlight Lecture at EUROMAT 2011.
