Additional information

Friction stir welding (FSW) is now a key joining process for Ti alloys, but the process is poorly understood. Crystallographic texture in the probe-affected region of FSWs is here correctly mathematically described for the first time by relating crystal orientation to the local shear reference frame instead of the traditional axes of the work piece. This has been fed directly into TWI (jonathan.martin@twi.co.uk) to identify key process variables for producing uniform structures and properties within welds.
