Additional information

This paper presents the theory and design behind a new approach to generating scientific software, and which is manifest in an open-source mathematical software library used at institutions and companies worldwide, including Columbia University, University of Chicago, Imperial College and University of Oxford. It is downloaded thousands of times per year. Its use and application is extensively discussed in public by users and developers, from around the world, at https://launchpad.net/dolfin. The 2013 workshop on this library (http://fenicsproject.org/featured/2013/fenics_13_cambridge.html) attracted more than 60 registered participants. The work has led to a research project supported by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (GBP200k, Dr Uchida, ID_in_audit_file@mhi.co.jp).
