This edition involved very substantial original research aimed at returning Burns's work to the context of its first publication. All poems, lyrics and scores are newly edited from the first published editions, listing textual variants. Notes draw on extensive original research into the material contexts of publication: format, location, adjacent material in e.g. newspapers, later collection. The introduction traces Burns's career in relation to the categories of literary production and social agency available to him. The edition includes an original collation of the glossaries from the Kilmarnock and Edinburgh editions with additional material researched from other sources.
