Double-weighted statement

This monograph, six years in preparation, develops a detailed reassessment of national identities in its period. Based in original research into a very extensive range of material from the period 1750-1830, it draws evidence from works of fiction, history, geography, philosophy, travel (from the Scottish Border to the Arctic) and the theory of language . It reads, for example, George Chalmers’ monumental geographical work Caledonia alongside the anthropology of Lord Monboddo, and the linguistic ideas of Hugh Blair. This complex range of material which informs its readings of both major and neglected authors underlies the request for double-weighting.
