Quintus Smyrnaeus' Posthomerica: Engaging Homer in Late Antiquity is the first full-scale monograph in English on the poem. In order to situate the poem within its cultural, philosophical and literary context, and to assess the function of its Homeric intertextuality, six-and-a-half years of research, writing and revision were required. This was based on detailed examination of a number of (mainly obscure) primary texts of the Imperial period, as well as investigation of a broad scope of earlier Greek and Latin literature, especially Epic, all against a background of traditional but largely outdated secondary works on Imperial Greek poetry.
