Reading Fictions, 1660-1740: Deception in English Literary and Politicial Culture
This 112,000 word monograph (222 pages) is the product of 7 years’ work (including 3 years as a full-time researcher, and 60% of available research time for 4 years thereafter). It meets the double-weighting requirements by (a) extensive use of archival and special collections sources, including unpublished letters, diaries, and marginalia from 10 libraries (b) analysis of a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary body of material (from political pamphlets to canonical novels) from an eighty-year period (c) presentation of a complex argument concerning the connections between literary and political texts, and the interpretation of early readers’ responses to truth-claims in these works.
