Suffering and Sentiment in Romantic Military Art
This 248 page, 100-000 word inter-disciplinary study is the culmination of over 10 years' research (representing 60% of Shaw's research time in the REF period). It qualifies as a double-weighted publication for the following reasons: (i) detailed analysis of over 40 images, 22 of which have received little or no prior critical attention; (ii) discussion of over 250 primary texts, including unpublished manuscripts, newspapers, journals and printed ephemera; (iii) demonstration of how evidence relates to broader cultural, historical and intellectual concerns; (iv) development of a new theoretical model for understanding representations of wartime suffering in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
