Muriel Spark: The Biography
This 220,000-word monograph (627pp) emerges from 16 years' research (representing 33% of Stannard's research time in the REF period) and demonstrates three key hallmarks for double-weighting: (i) depth of source base (including hundreds of unpublished letters and diaries from over 80 public and private archives alongside printed sources), over 60 interviews, and sophisticated analysis of these and extensive secondary sources; (ii) the sustaining of multiple nuanced discussions of e.g. feminism, Modernist aesthetics, and Scottish national identity; (iii) articulation of a new framework for interpreting Spark's thinking alongside that of other major writers e.g. T.S. Eliot, Waugh, Greene, and Robbe-Grillet.
