This paper utilises and extends methods originally developed in photonics to solve a very technical challenging problem in neuroscience. This is the first paper to obtain information-optimal neural tuning curves valid at neurophysiological relevant timescales. The analysis developed over many years and was funded by two EPSRC grants GR/R35650/01 and EP/D05/1894/ as part of our ongoing work to understand coding of auditory stimuli by the human ear. This publication led to an invitation to give a plenary talk at the International Conference on Intelligent Sensors, Sensor Networks and Information Processing (Melbourne 2013) which unfortunately had to be declined.
