Significance of output:

This paper provided new and important insights into the in vivo wear mechanisms of CoCrMo. These results are essential in understanding the compatibility and performance of metal-on-metal hip replacements currently in patients and have since been recalled. The work has in addition been exploited to build the Southampton NHS Trust Foundation / University collaboration (linking surgical / medical / engineering groups) to be utilised in the new Wessex Implant Centre (opening in August 2012). The retrieval and revision centre will be uniquely placed to address the current medical and public concerns with MoM implants.
