Double-weighted statement

•The book’s seven ‘case studies’ required an extensive sifting of and selection from the British Museum’s collection of over 12,000 caricatures

•The book’s pioneering methodology of intensive close reading required:1) meticulous research in the British Museum into each print’s provenance, compositional details and ‘inter-visual’ links to other caricatures 2) charting the complex ‘web’ of each image’s discursive connections to Romantic print culture – this required the mastery of a vast range of primary sources including periodicals, reportage, imaginative literature, political economy, historiography, parliamentary speeches and reports, and religious tracts; 3) identifying the influences of British and European art on each caricature.
