Carbon Monoxide Induces Cardiac Arrhythmia via Induction of the Late Na+ Current
Raised atmospheric levels of levels of carbon monoxide (e.g. due to traffic) have been identified as a cause of increased hospital admissions for arrhythmias. In addition, clinical reports have described arrhythmias in cyclists or pedestrians passing through areas where CO accumulates, e.g. tunnels. In this international study, we identified for the first time that the cause of CO induced arrhythmias is an effect on the “Late Na current” (INalate). Further, we identified a novel drug therapy for CO induced arrhythmias, which acts by inhibiting INalate. In recognition of the significance of these findings, the paper was supported by an Editorial and received wide media attention, including the BBC and Zee News (India).
