Design and behavioural change
This article published in the Journal of Design Strategies combines theories of behavioural change from social psychology with design for sustainability principles to create an initial design for behaviour change model. The article makes explicit the forgotten agency of design in driving change.
The model has since been utilised by Clune in research, consultancy and as a model in design education. The paper led to Clune’s inclusion on the Beyond Behaviour Change network at RMIT University. The group drew on theories of social practice to inform and reorient policy and programs aimed at achieving social and environmental change.
Clune’s understanding of design and behavioural change informed the development of successful competitive grants awarded to the RMIT University by the metropolitan waste management group (Au$21,000), and the Victorian EPA, ($160,000) to look at food waste reduction via design.
Clune continues to advance and apply the research pursued in this article – for example, he is a Co-Investigator on a collaborative research proposal across five Universities in the UK to develop a network for design for behaviour change.
