Performance Sportswear and Technical Textiles

The invited contribution is rooted in professional, academic and research engagement, over three decades, in the fields of fashion, sportswear, textiles design and engineering. The author has supervised and examined doctoral projects that address pioneering technological interventions in the development of additive fibre configurations and structures for the production of 3 dimensional apparel and performance products. For 10 years Angus acted as technical design consultant to the Italian studio responsible (inter alia) for Dunhill Sport in Japan, undertaking two month-long Design Residencies in the Italian regional headquarters of Shima Seiki (Europe) Ltd., the market leader in digitally controlled knitwear and Wholegarment™ machinery.

He researched and developed innovations in fabric development and formative laser usage for performance sportswear. This also led to extensive research for the Mountain Heritage Trust, funded by the National Lottery, in the forensic analysis and replication of George Leigh Mallory’s 1924 Everest climbing attire and component textiles, resulting in international media coverage, the project having become the subject of an Innovation for Extremes Conference, University of Lancaster at the Mountain Heritage Trust in Cumbria. Research undertaken by the author is underpinned and characterised by a long–standing commitment to the investigation of the hybrid power of old and new technologies in the creation of novel artefacts; this is reflected in the current parallel publication of a chapter on Craft Renaissance in Fashion & Textiles (ibid.)

The author has made a number of national conference contributions in respect of the hybridisation of technologies, ranging from the customisation of architectural surfaces to the sew-free configuration of complex textile assemblages. In addition, by invitation of the organisers, Angus curated exhibitions of innovative textiles within the context of major trade fairs such as the London Fabric Fair at the Commonwealth Institute and The Cloth Show at Olympia.
