This study established non-destructive, rapid terahertz imaging as an alternative to dissolution tests for coating quality control. Bayer funded a studentship following up from this work resulting in patent (EP12167035.0-1219) and five papers. In 2012 Advantest Corporation developed its own THz tablet coating imaging instruments to compete with TeraView Ltd. They have hired >10 scientists in their new facility in Princeton, USA to develop work in this field. The work has stimulated research initiatives in the US (Lisa Zurk, Portland State, NSF 1231783) and Germany (Applied Competence Cluster Terahertz, Ruhr University Bochum, 2013) looking into pharmaceutical THz applications.
