Additional information
Super resolution methods, in which sub-wavelength source localization is achieved, are having a revolutionary impact in optical microscopy. Inspired by this we explored the possibility of achieving a similar information gain in ultrasound imaging using the detection of isolated microbubbles with an obvious potential initial application to mapping microvasculature in vivo. The paper presents the first demonstration of this new concept, achieving up to 5 times higher resolution than is possible with the intrinsic point spread function of the ultrasound system concerned.
